Caring for trees and the future

The Services Department commemorated Arbor Day with a special initiative emphasising continuity and sustainability.
The Department revisited the 16 fruit trees planted on campus during last year’s Arbor Day celebration, with staff participating in activities dedicated to nurturing and caring for these plants.
From watering, mulching to pruning and monitoring growth, participants engaged in activities that highlighted the continuous nature of sustainability and efforts towards maintaining a green campus.
Returning to previous sites served as a powerful reminder of the consistency required in environmental efforts. “It is not just about planting trees once,” remarked Israel Mogomotsi, Director of the Services Department. “We are building a culture of sustainability where environmental care is ongoing, and these fruit trees symbolise the growth of that commitment.”
The fruit trees are now thriving, but still require care to reach full maturity and eventually bear fruit. This hands-on effort reinforces the mindset that sustainable practices require dedication over time, just as these trees will need ongoing attention to flourish.
“By nurturing the fruit trees planted last year, we are nurturing the values of care, responsibility, and sustainability, which are core principles that are integral to the department’s mission and essential in the fight against climate change,” continued Mogomotsi.
Leveraging on partnership, the Services Department was supported by Rothe Landscapers a service provider to the Department, who sponsored compost. The Services Department is responsible for Environmental Services (Cleaning, Hygiene, Pest Control, Grounds, Landscaping and Waste Management); Operations Unit (Transport and Fleet Management, Professional Development Hub, Printing and Mailing); Retail Operations and Hospitality Unit (Dining Hall Catering, Retail Outlets, and Wits Rural Campus) among other services.
