Prof Aubrey Makgotloe completed a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand before continuing his specialist training in Ophthalmology at Wits and receiving his Fellowship in Ophthalmology from the Colleges of Medicine and Surgery of South Africa. He has a Master of Medicine from the University of the Witwatersrand.

His areas of interest include Vitreoretinal Surgery and Uveitis.
