The Wits School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Council and the Wits SAICE student chapter attends a community outreach programme

On 27 May 2023, the Wits School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Council and the Wits SAICE student chapter attended a community outreach programme hosted by Kulani-Grow, a non-profit organization founded by the School council chairperson Miss Mary Chirwa.

The mentorship event was aimed at grade 10 to grade 12 learners from the Katlehong township in Gauteng. The mentors spoke to young learners about careers that they would wish to study in the near future. The event comprised four prestigious guest speakers who are professionals in their various fields of studies, namely, Nelisiwe Mbatha, an Accountant, Isaac Chirwa, a Risk officer, Mookodi Mokoatle, the founder of Lehae Arcadia, as well as Dr Rodney Ramonyathe, a medical doctor.

Various student societies participated in the mentoring sessions. These included the Wits Medical School Council and the University of Johannesburg Civils Society.

The Wits civils school council and the Wits SAICE chapter contributed to the event by offering mentoring and donating stationery to young learners. In addition to the aforementioned contributions, the two parties also sponsored a quiz where the learners won various prizes and cash prizes. Considering that Katlehong is a disadvantaged community, it was a pleasure for the team to share knowledge with the young people and to give them hope for the future through education.
