Pandemic Education in Health Science

The Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care invites you to our final session titled: "Pandemic Education in Health Science "  In this live discussion hosted by Charlene Mapukata, Clinical associate; Prof Judy Bruce, Assistant Dean teaching and learning at University of the Witwatersrand and Prof Susan van Schalkwyk, Director for the Centre for Health Profession’s Education, Stellenbosch University The speakers will delve into the many challenges and opportunities that Medical schools faced and continue to face during this pandemic. We focus on lessons learned and the importance of teaching about pandemics in health education.

Judith Bruce

Professor Judith Bruce is a nurse academic and researcher, with 35 years’ experience in the education of nurses – 12 years in the public college sector and the remainder in higher education.  Her specific interest is in problem-based learning, assessment of learning and curricular issues in nursing education. In recognition of her teaching excellence  she was awarded the Faculty’s Phillip Tobias Distinguished Teacher’s Award in 2002 and again in 2010 for maintaining excellence in postgraduate teaching.  
 
As former Head of Nursing, her clinical research interest was in trauma and  emergency nursing – a field in which she has remained active until recently.  Over that past 18 years, she has successfully mentored over 40 postgraduate
students to completion. She has published widely in accredited, peer-reviewed  journals, is the author of two nursing textbooks and has contributed to more than 20 chapters in books.  

Susan van Schalkwyk

Professor Susan van Schalkwyk, M Phil, PhD., is Professor in Health Professions Education and Director of the Centre for Health Professions Education in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences where she is involved in the supervision of Master's and PhD students, and faculty development. Her research interests include teaching and learning in the health professions, with a specific focus on postgraduate studies and academic writing. She is active in health professions education, both nationally and internationally, and is currently a member of the AMEE (Association of Medical Educationalists) Research and Faculty Development Committees, and an associate editor for The Clinical Teacher. She is a founding member of the Bellagio Global Health Education Initiative, an interdisciplinary, multinational effort to advance global health education worldwide, and leads the SAAHE health professions education research special interest group.
