Vacancy for: Part-Time Lecturer Third Year Drawing and Contemporary Practice
The Department of Fine Art is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to join our team as a part-time lecturer to facilitate an exciting module on Collective/Self-Publishing and Book Arts. This position offers an opportunity to inspire and guide undergraduate Fine Art students in their exploration, deepening and growth of their independent and collective creative research and contemporary art practice.
Course Details:
- Module: Third Year Drawing and Contemporary Practice (Collective/Self-Publishing and Book Arts)
- Duration: 9 September – 22 October 2024 (with an exam period of 6 - 12 November: TBC)
- Total contract Hours: 105 hours
- Renumeration: 380 per hour
Responsibilities: As a lecturer, you will:
- Teach and Engage: Lead 10 ‘ephemeral’ collectives (average 5 members in a collective) to create collective publications that stays true to their own collective editorial frameworks / provocations /manifestos / questions / positions / speculations… think Medu Art Ensemble Newsletters via 雷速体育_雷速体育直播rider with a detour to Chimurenga into the Future
- Weekly lectures / consults: 12 hours of contact time per week, with a class of 51 students (in collectives), working towards conceptualising and realising collective/self-publications.
- Studio process and consults: To structure, manage and deliver a program of editorial and RISOgraph printing processes, consults and feedback for work in progress.
- Feedback and Guidance: Provide constructive feedback to students on their work, fostering their growth and creativity.
- Facilitation of Final exhibition: Work with the cohort to bring their Collective/Self-Publishing and Book Arts to fruition in the context of a final event (a Collective/Self-Publishing and Book Arts fair) in November which will be their summative assessment.
- Teaching team: To be able to work as part of a teaching team that delivers the course
- Administration: To manage the Ulwazi (canvas site), prepare briefing documents and course guides (you will have access to past material), and to communicate with students in an appropriate and timeous manner.
- Assessments: To manage assessments and marking of work in progress and final work, to share these assessments, give feedback, and upload marks consistent with university processes.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Teaching Experience: Applicants should have at least 1-3 years of teaching experience, as well as professional experience as an artist.
- Collective/Self-Publishing and Book Arts: Track record of making publications – collective publishing is a high priority here, especially with the RISOgraph.
- Education: A Master’s degree (MA) in a relevant field is required.
Areas of Expertise: The ideal candidate will have experience in and be able to teach the following areas:
- Material processes of art making: Will be able to advise and give input to the making of collective/self-publications using the RISO SF5030 duplicator machine.
- Conceptual thinking: Be able to discuss and give feedback on conceptual areas of creative practice – with a focus on translating, deepening and innovating textual and visual editorial frameworks.
- Theoretical awareness: Be able to discuss the theoretical underpinnings of diverse creative practices, with a focus on Southern Africa and Global South (artistic) publishing practices
- Historical and Contemporary Context: Understand and be able to speak to historical and contemporary publishing practices by collectives, artists, activists etc and have an understanding of appropriate context.
Duties: In this role, you will:
- Course Preparation: Work with existing material to create engaging course outlines.
- Course Introduction: Introduce the module to students, setting the stage for their creative journey.

- Collaboration: Coordinate with a teaching team (you will be working alongside a Post Graduate Merit Award assistant who provides 6 hours a week to the course).
- Assessment: Conduct fair assessments, marking student work, and offering valuable feedback during and at the end of the module.
