Master of Engineering (Professional)
The Master of Engineering (Professional) is offered in the branch of Civil Engineering. The coursework and/or research will fall under one of the following sub-disciplines: Environmental, geotechnical, materials, structural, water, and project & construction management.
Overview
Programme name: MEng (Professional)
Credit distribution: Seven 20-credits courses and a 45-credits Research/Industrial project.
The bulk of the credits for the MEng (Professional) programme come from the seven 20-credit courses. Provided that you meet the pre-requisites, you can take any of the PG courses that the School offers. The only limitation is that at least two of the seven courses should be in the same sub-discipline (e.g. geotechnical engineering).
The coursework and/or research will fall under one of the following sub-disciplines: Environmental, geotechnical, materials, structural, water, and project & construction management.
Courses offered by the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Engineering typically run every second year. View the PG Timetable 2024. Please note that if a course is listed in the Rules and Syllabuses Book of the FEBE, but has not been offered by our School during the last two years, then it is likely that such course is currently inactive.
In some cases, the School can also grant credit for engineering-related NQF level 9 postgraduate courses taken outside of the School. Specifically, up to three of the seven 20-credit courses can be engineering-related. These engineering-related courses may be taken within Wits or at other South African universities. The engineering-related courses cannot be part of any other degree that the student is seeking or has been awarded.
The 45-credits research/industrial project runs every year. 雷速体育_雷速体育直播s can choose from three or four different projects proposed by the School and which focus on different sub-disciplines of civil engineering: Water, Transportation, Structures, Project Management, Materials, Geotechnical, or Environmental Engineering. However, to promote an even distribution of students across all sub-disciplines, not all students may be allocated to their preferred project. The project coordinator or supervisor will be appointed by the School. Accordingly, applicants to the MEng (Professional) programme are not required to secure a supervisor prior to applying.
Entry Requirements
- 4-year bachelor's degree in any branch of engineering or an engineering-related field (e.g. geology, project management, architecture, etc.).
Applicants with a BTech qualification or a 4-year degree in a non-engineering field can be considered for admission provided that they have more than three years of engineering-related working experience obtained after the date of qualification. Such applicants are required to fill a differently qualified form Form for Differently Qualified Applicants (DQA) to indicate their qualification and document their experience. Be sure that you fill in and submit a "differently qualified form" when completing your registration.
