Overview
The MSc in Mechanical Engineering degree is a NQF level 9 qualification that can be completed by Research Dissertation or by Course Work and Research Report (50/50).
In the Research Dissertation option, the candidate prepares a dissertation that constitutes both an application of the methods of research and a contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the subject chosen.
In the 50/50 option, candidates complete 6 elective courses, the Research Methods course and a Research Report. Download the elective curricula and timetable to see what is on offer.

Entry Requirements
For the Research Dissertation and 50/50 option:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering 4th year or equivalent cognate qualification (NQF 8) average >= 65 % may be admitted to Master of Science
- The 65 % may be reviewed if the applicant has relevant working experience those described in the Differently Qualified Applicant tables.
- A supervisor from the Faculty of Engineering or the Built Environment must be identified and approached prior to application.

Once your application is complete in terms of requested documentation, your application will be referred to the relevant School for assessment. - Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
- Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
- Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
