Master of Arts in Social Work by Research

Overview


Master of Arts in Social Work by Research, Programme code: ARA05; Plan code: APRASCW70

This course is offered as a full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years) postgraduate degree. Applicants wanting to register for this degree are expected to undertake a research study on a topic approved by the Department under the guidance of a departmental research supervisor.

Entry Requirements


Entrance requirements include the following:

  • A four-year Bachelor or Honours degree in Social Work with a minimum average of 65% in the final year of study (excluding the research report mark);
  • A minimum of 65% for the four-year Bachelor or Honours degree in Social Work research report;
  • Registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a social worker;
  • SAQA NQF level 8 for international Honours degree in Social Work;
  • Submission of a concept paper for the planned research study; and
  • Accepted applicants are required to attend a three-day research methodology refresher course programme offered in the department, and seminars presented by Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Humanities.

  • Please apply online. Upload your supporting documents at the time of application, or via the Self Service Portal.
  • Applicants can monitor the progress of their applications via the Self Service Portal.
  • Selections for programmes that have a limited intake but attract a large number of applications may only finalise the application at the end of the application cycle.
